TheFAN54005combinesahighlyintegratedswitch-modecharger,tominimizesingle-cellLithium-ion(Li-ion)chargingtimefromaUSBpowersource,andaboostregulatortopoweraUSBperipheralfromthebattery.

ThechargingparametersandoperatingmodesareprogrammablethroughanI2CInterfacethatoperatesupto3.4Mbps.Thechargerandboostregulatorcircuitsswitchat3MHztominimizethesizeofexternalpassivecomponents.

TheFAN54005providesbatterycharginginthreephases:conditioning,constantcurrentandconstantvoltage.

ToensureUSBcomplianceandminimizechargingtime,theinputcurrentlimitcanbechangedthroughtheI2Cinterfacebythehostprocessor.Chargeterminationisdeterminedbyaprogrammableminimumcurrentlevel.AsafetytimerwithresetcontrolprovidesasafetybackupfortheI2Chost.ChargestatusisreportedtothehostthroughtheI2Cport.

Theintegratedcircuit(IC)automaticallyrestartsthechargecyclewhenthebatteryfallsbelowaninternalthreshold.Iftheinputsourceisremoved,theICentersahigh-impedancemode,preventingleakagefromthebatterytotheinput.Chargecurrentisreducedwhenthedietemperaturereaches120°C,protectingthedeviceandPCBfromdamage.

TheFAN54005canoperateasaboostregulatoroncommandfromthesystem.Theboostregulatorincludesasoft-startthatlimitsinrushcurrentfromthebatteryandusesthesameexternalcomponentsusedforchargingthebattery.
